How to Spend EPIC 4 days in Madeira
Hey, We're back! Wondering where we disappeared to this time? Well, we just spent the most
magical 4 days in Madeira, and I'm here to spill all the details of our incredible girls trip adventure. If you're
looking for a destination that combines stunning landscapes, delicious food, rich culture, and
unique experiences, look no further than this Portuguese island gem (actually closer to Africa than it is to Europe!).
Whatever you're looking for, trust me, Madeira has it all!! And by the end of this "4 Days in Madeira
Itinerary," you'll see why it's called the "Hawaii of Europe."
Without further ado, let's kick off our 4 days in Madeira itinerary!
Day 1 of 4 Days in Madeira (Friday)
Landing in Funchal
Our Madeira itinerary officially started when we touched down in Funchal, the island's capital, at
3:15 PM on a Friday. The sun was shining, and a warm, salty breeze welcomed us as we stepped
off the plane. Lush greenery and colorful flowers were everywhere—it was like stepping into a
postcard. Quick note- this is the island where Christian’s Reynaldo was born in, hence why the airport is named after him. Madeira definitely lives up to its reputation as a tropical paradise!
Checking In to the Savoy Palace Hotel
Next up, we made our way to the Savoy Palace Hotel, our home for the next few nights. This place
is the epitome of luxury. The moment we entered the lobby, our jaws dropped. It's massive, with
ornate details and a color palette that screams "royalty." If you're looking to add a touch of
indulgence to your 4-day Madeira itinerary, this place was definitely worth it.
After a long day of travel, it was the perfect place to unwind and recharge for the
adventures ahead.
A Celebration Dinner at Kampo
By 8:45 PM, we were ready for our first dinner in Madeira. We had booked a table at Kampo, a
restaurant by Chef Julio Pereira that had been on my radar for months. Tucked away in the heart
of Funchal, Kampo is an intimate space with an open kitchen, giving you a front-row seat to the
culinary magic that unfolds.
The restaurant's focus is on fresh, seasonal ingredients, and the menu is constantly evolving to
reflect what's available.
Each dish showcased Chef Pereira's talent and creativity. If you're a foodie,
Kampo is a must-visit during your 4 days in Madeira.
With our bellies full and our hearts happy, we headed back to the Savoy Palace, ready for a good
night's sleep and the exciting adventures that awaited us on day 2 of our 4-day Madeira itinerary.
Day 2 of 4 Days in Madeira (Saturday)
Today was our day to explore Funchal. First up was our Funicular Ride to Monte and Monte Palace Tropical Garden
Our first stop was the Monte Funicular, a cable car that whisks you up the mountainside to the
picturesque village of Monte. The views during the ride were breathtaking, giving us a whole new
perspective of Funchal and the coastline.
At the top, we entered the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, a sprawling oasis filled with exotic plants
from all over the world. We wandered through lush pathways, marveling at the vibrant flowers,
tranquil ponds, and even a collection of intricate tile panels.
Quick Tip: Enjoy a refreshing pineapple drink while enjoying the serene view of swans and
flamingos. It was absolutely worth it.
Toboggan Ride from Monte
Now, this is where our 4-day Madeira itinerary took a fun and unexpected turn. Instead of taking
the cable car back down, we opted for a toboggan ride! Yes, you read that right—toboggans in a
tropical paradise! These wicker sleds, steered by two "carreiros" (carriers) in traditional white
outfits, are a unique Madeiran tradition that dates back centuries.
It's definitely a must-do experience if you're looking for a little adrenaline rush during
your 4 days in Madeira.
Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers Market)
After our toboggan adventure, we wandered over to the Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal's
bustling farmers market. This place is a feast for the senses, with colorful stalls overflowing with
fresh produce, flowers, fish, and local delicacies. We sampled exotic fruits like passion fruit and
custard apples, chatted with friendly vendors, and soaked up the lively atmosphere.
If you're looking to experience authentic Madeiran culture during your 4 days in Madeira, the
Mercado dos Lavradores is a must-visit. It's a great place to grab a snack, buy souvenirs, and learn
about the island's unique culinary traditions.
Quick Fact: The market building itself is worth admiring. It's a beautiful example of Art Deco
architecture, with stunning tile panels depicting scenes of local life.
Brunch at Prima Caju
By now, we had worked up quite an appetite, so we headed to Prima Caju for a healthy and
delicious brunch. This trendy spot is located in the Hotel Caju but has a completely separate vibe.
It's super Instagrammable, with lots of greenery and natural light.
We opted for their smoothie bowls, which were packed with fresh fruit and superfoods. They also
have a great selection of savory bowls, salads, and sandwiches.
Quick Tip: Prima Caju doesn't take reservations, so be prepared to wait for a table, especially during
peak brunch hours. But trust me, the food is worth it!
Exploring the Downtown Historical Area
After brunch, we strolled through Funchal's historic downtown, known as Zona Velha. This area is
a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and charming shops.
One of the highlights of Zona Velha is the "Portas Pintadas" project, where local artists have
transformed ordinary doors into vibrant works of art. It's like a free outdoor gallery!
We also visited the Corpo Santo Chapel, one of the oldest buildings in Funchal, and the Socorro
Church, a beautiful example of Baroque architecture.
If you're a history buff or simply enjoy exploring charming old towns, Zona Velha is a must-see
during your 4 days in Madeira. This is always where we stopped by at souvenir shops for gifts to bring back home
The "Madeira, tão tua!" Letreiro
Continuing our exploration of Funchal, we couldn't resist snapping a photo by the "Madeira, tão
tua!" sign. This large, colorful installation is a relatively new addition to the city but has quickly
become a beloved landmark. The playful design and vibrant colors make it a popular spot for
photos, and the message behind it ("Madeira, so yours!") perfectly captures the island's
welcoming spirit.
Strolling through Santa Catarina Park
Next on our 4-day Madeira itinerary was Santa Catarina Park, a peaceful oasis in the heart of
Funchal. This sprawling green space is home to a variety of plants and flowers, as well as a
charming lake where you can relax and watch the ducks and swans glide by.
We took a leisurely stroll through the park, admiring the sculptures, enjoying the shade of the
trees, and soaking up the serene atmosphere. It's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of
the city and recharge for the rest of your 4 days in Madeira.
Dinner at savoy palace restaurant.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to 5 Sentidos for dinner. This restaurant is known for
its creative cuisine, which blends traditional Portuguese flavors with modern techniques and
international influences.
We were seated at a cozy table with a view of the open kitchen, and our taste buds were tantalized
by each dish that arrived. The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented. The
service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.
If you're a foodie looking for a memorable dining experience during your 4 days in Madeira, 5
Sentidos is a must-try. It's a bit on the pricier side, but the quality of the food and service makes it
worth every penny.
Day 3 of 4 Days in Madeira (Sunday)
Watching Sunrise Amidst Clouds at Pico de Areiro
Our day began with a pre-dawn drive to Pico de Areiro, the third-highest peak in Madeira. We rented a taxi (we booked through our hotel for an early pickup. Bolt is the Uber equivalent as well and for this trip we did not rent a car!) It took
about 40 minutes from our hotel in Funchal, and the journey was worth every twist and turn. We
bundled up in layers (it gets chilly at that altitude!), arrived about 30 minutes before sunrise, and
hiked a short distance to the viewpoint.
As the first rays of light peeked over the horizon, we were treated to a breathtaking spectacle: a
sea of fluffy clouds stretching out below us, painted with vibrant shades of pink, orange, and gold.
It was a magical moment that I'll never forget.
Seixal Beach and the Village of Ribeira da Janela
After our sunrise adventure, we headed north to explore the rugged coastline of Madeira. Our
first stop was Seixal Beach, a stunning black sand beach that's a photographer's dream. The
contrast between the dark sand, the turquoise water, and the lush green cliffs is simply
breathtaking.
Quick Fact: Madeira's black sand beaches are formed from volcanic rock, which gives them their
unique color and texture.
We spent some time relaxing on the beach, dipping our toes in the cool Atlantic, and soaking up
the sun. Seixal Beach is also a popular spot for water sports like bodyboarding and kayaking, so if
you're feeling adventurous, there are plenty of options to get your adrenaline pumping.
Next, we drove a short distance to the charming village of Ribeira da Janela. This picturesque town
is nestled on a mountainside overlooking the ocean and is known for its unique rock formations
that resemble windows ("janela" in Portuguese). We explored the village's narrow streets, admired
the traditional houses, and enjoyed the stunning views of the Atlantic.
Natural Swimming Pools of Porto Moniz
Next, we stopped by the natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz. These saltwater pools are formed
by volcanic rock, and they're the perfect place to cool off and relax after a day of exploring. The
pools are filled by the ocean, so the water is always refreshing, and the views of the rugged
coastline are simply stunning.
Dinner at Akua
Remember Kampo, the amazing restaurant we visited on our first night in Madeira? Well, the same
chef, Júlio Pereira, has another gem called Akua. We headed there for dinner at around 6:45 PM.
Located a stone's throw from Kampo in Funchal, Akua specializes in seafood, and it did not
disappoint.
The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made us feel right at home, and the dishes were simply
divine. Each bite was a burst of fresh, ocean-inspired flavors. We savored every moment of our
meal, knowing that it was one of the highlights of our 4 days in Madeira.
Catching the Sunset at Cabo Girão (Optional)
If you have time, I highly recommend taking a detour to Cabo Girão for the sunset. This cliffside
viewpoint boasts one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, offering panoramic views of the ocean
and the island's rugged coastline. When the sun sets the sky transforms into a canvas of fiery
oranges, pinks, and purples, casting a warm glow over the dramatic landscape.
Ponta de São Lourenço - Dragon's Tail Hike
To wind up day 3 of our 4 days in Madeira, we decided to hike the Ponta de São Lourenço. his
iconic trail, also known as the "Dragon's Tail," winds along the island's easternmost peninsula,
offering dramatic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. The hike is about 7 kilometers (4.3
miles). It's considered moderately challenging, but the stunning scenery makes it worth the effort.
We reached the trailhead, about a 40-minute drive from our hotel, just as the last rays of sunlight
were disappearing. We didn't have time for the full hike, but we did walk a portion of the trail to
take in the incredible views. The bare, volcanic landscape was unlike anything we had seen
elsewhere on the island, and it felt like we were stepping into another world.
Day 4 of 4 Days in Madeira (Monday)
Watching the Sunrise at Ponta do Rosto
We started the last day of our 4 days in Madeira bright and early, setting off for Ponta do Rosto
before sunrise. It was about a 30-minute drive from Funchal, and the best part? No hiking
required! We got there by 6:15 AM and the sunrise was at 7:00 AM. A short walk from the parking
lot led us to the Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto viewpoint, perched on the easternmost tip of
Madeira.
As the sun peeked over the horizon, we were treated to a panoramic view of the "Dragon's Tail"
(Ponta de São Lourenço) bathed in the golden morning light.
Quick Tip: The Ponta do Rosto viewpoint is easily accessible by car, making it an ideal spot for those
who want to enjoy stunning views without a strenuous hike.
Vereda Dos Balcões (Levada dos Balcões)
After our sunrise adventure, we headed to Ribeiro Frio, a picturesque village about an hour's drive
from Funchal. This charming spot is home to a trout farm, restaurants, and the starting point of
the Vereda dos Balcões trail.
This easy 1.7-mile hike follows a Levada (irrigation channel) through a lush forest, offering stunning
views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail is well-maintained and relatively flat,
making it a great option for families or anyone looking for a leisurely walk in nature.
At the end of the trail, we reached the Balcões viewpoint, a dramatic cliffside perch with
panoramic views of the Ribeira da Metade valley. It was the perfect spot for a photo op and a
chance to reflect on our incredible 4 days in Madeira.
Optional Detour: Levada do Caldeirão Verde
While the Vereda dos Balcões trail is a popular choice for its easy access and stunning views, if
you're looking for a more challenging hike, the nearby Levada do Caldeirão Verde is a great option.
This trail leads to a dramatic waterfall, Caldeirão Verde, and offers a more immersive experience
in Madeira's lush forests.
Cascata dos Anjos ("Waterfall of Angels")
Continuing our 4-day Madeira adventure, we headed towards the southern coast of the island.
Our next stop was the unique Cascata dos Anjos, or "Waterfall of Angels." Now, this isn't your
average waterfall. It cascades directly onto the ER101 road, creating a natural "car wash" for
passing vehicles!
We couldn't resist pulling over to witness this quirky natural phenomenon. Watching cars drive
through the waterfall was a sight to behold, and we even joined in on the fun, running through
the spray and laughing like kids.
Lunch at Lá Ao Fundo
At around 1:30 PM, our stomachs were rumbling, so we made our way to Lá Ao Fundo for a late
lunch. This charming restaurant, located in the coastal town of Ponta do Sol, serves up delicious
Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine with a focus on fresh seafood.
We savored dishes like grilled tuna steaks, spicy prawns, and a variety of local fish specialties. The
food was exceptional, and the portions were generous. We also enjoyed a glass of their refreshing
house wine, which perfectly complemented the flavors of our meal.
Exploring the A-Frame Houses in Santana
Our 4 days in Madeira itinerary wouldn't be complete without a visit to Santana, a charming village
known for its traditional A-frame houses. These colorful, thatched-roof cottages are like something
out of a fairytale, and they're a true symbol of Madeira's unique architectural heritage.
We strolled through the village, admiring the well-preserved houses, snapping photos, and soaking
up the quaint atmosphere. Each house is unique, with its own vibrant colors and intricate details.
Quick Fact: Santana's A-frame houses were originally built in the 15th century as simple dwellings
for farmers and fishermen. Today, they're a popular tourist attraction and a reminder of Madeira's
rich history.
Restaurante Sol Poente & Ponta do Sol Pier Sunset
For the final evening of our 4 days in Madeira, we headed to the picturesque coastal town of Ponta
do Sol. We started with dinner at Restaurante Sol Poente around 5:30 PM, where we enjoyed
delicious seafood dishes while taking in the stunning views of the ocean.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Ponta do Sol pier. This historic landmark is known
for its unique architecture and is a popular spot for watching the sunset. We found a cozy spot on
the pier and watched as the sky transformed into a fiery canvas of orange, pink, and purple hues.
It was the perfect way to end our 4-day Madeira adventure.
Ponta do Sol, meaning "Point of the Sun," certainly lives up to its name. It's a beautiful town with
a laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing vacation. If you have some extra time
during your 4 days in Madeira, I highly recommend spending a few hours exploring this charming
town.
As we watched the last rays of sunlight disappear over the horizon, we couldn't help but feel
grateful for the incredible experiences we had during our time in Madeira. This island paradise had
captured our hearts with its stunning landscapes, warm hospitality, and rich culture.
